Prior to the match Steve very proactively set out the sides. For the first time in recent memory agreed teams were ready before arrival.
Prior to kick off Barkball had to pull out so the teams were re-jigged. Six Muftis against five Bibs so the Bibs were granted the right to play rush keeper.
In the previous report JonF was identified as having led out a team that did not play in the JonF way and ended up getting drubbed 15 – 7. With this in mind no one was surprised when this week he opened his team’s scoring. Soon it was 3 – 2 to the Bibs who should have been struggling with a player less. At 4 - 2 Steve gently pointed out that JonF had scored all four goals.
At this point the Bibs had everyone’s attention. A one man hurricane seemed to be tearing through the Muftis. To paraphrase Marshall Mathers - the Real JonF had stood up.
Mark is a person you want in front of you when you are in goal. He plays the sort of defensive game where he can take the ball away from an attacker then thoughtfully saunter up the pitch with it. Mark pulled up with an injury that meant he could play no further part in the game.
With even numbered sides the game continued.
The Bibs went on to extend the score to 7 – 2 with JonF achieving a double hat-trick. The pick of the goals was a volley where the ball was enticing floated in from the right at just above waist height. As the ball hung invitingly at the edge of the area JonF seemed to climb an imaginary step in the air and leather the ball into the net. It is not known who supplied the ball but the physics defying way it seemed to almost halt in the air waiting to be hit made it one of the assists of the season.
No one could understand what had gone wrong with the Muftis; 7 - 2 down despite being a person up for most of the match. The outfield Muftis began to have a go in order to at least finish the match with a respectable score. Jorge did what Jorge does, in his new boots with his back to goal and three players on him he was still able to trap the ball and turn then dexterously thread it through the eye of a needle to score. JakeFlowers and Scott joined him in the pursuit of goals showing all of the balance and poise needed to slot the ball past defenders and keeper alike. Soon, with the other team beginning to arrive, the Muftis had the score at a more respectable 8 – 5. Then Scott was injured and had to leave the pitch.
As the next team were already pulling up some players believed it was all over. There were however six minutes left on the clock. Rather than allow the game to end Eddie01 offered to switch sides. This was like Mahrez agreeing to help Sunderland see out a match in the last few minutes.
The Muftis welcomed their new best friend with open arms and were tasked with consolidating their comeback by scoring three goals in five minutes. All the four men of the Bibs needed to do was drop back and see the match out. One of the next team was at the fence and his mates were amassing. The match was virtually over.
The Muftis nicked one goal back. 8 – 6. Two goals required in four minutes
The Muftis nicked another goal back 8 – 7. One goal required in two minutes.
The Muftis nicked another goal back. Game even, the noble drawer was upon us.
The Muftis hit another goal back to go 8 – 9 ahead.
Still the other team stood by the gate.
Jorge already had his hat-trick and with virtually the last kick of the match JakeFlowers put the score beyond all doubt and completed his hat-trick.
Inexplicably the Comeback Kids had come from 8 – 5 down with five minutes to go to win 8 – 10.
Match awarded to the Muftis 10 – 8.
Things to Note
Players send Mark and Scott best wishes for speedy recuperations form their respective injuries.
As always we praise the noble sportsmanship of the players who, without any complaint, played a lot of the evening with a one man disadvantage. Well done Bibs.
We respect JonF for scoring either a double hat-trick or seven goals and single handedly destroying the opposition in a manner not seen since the days of Danny’s 10 goals in a match.
Jorge, whom we know deals in the economics of situations, was heard to enquire what was the value of scoring seven goals and still finishing up on the losing side?
JonF was heard to observe that everyone knows who the real winners were. The match report remains neutral and accepts both sentiments. Football can be a cruel game.
Finally the fixture recognises that there are few kinder things that a player can do than switch sides from 8 – 5 up with six minutes left just to allow the game to continue. Eddie01 we salute you and the way you deservedly still ended up on the winning side
Let’s do it all again on Wednesday 13 April 2016
